Reginald Doherty defeated Wilberforce Eaves 6â3, 7â5, 2â0 (retired) in the All Comers' Final, and then defeated the reigning champion Harold Mahony 6â4, 6â4, 6â3 in the challenge round to win the gentlemen's singles tennis title at the 1897 Wimbledon Championships.[1][2]
